The U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating the naturalization records of Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, focusing on discrepancies in her recorded birthdate. Official documents present two different birthdates for the Congresswoman: some list October 4, 1981, while others state October 4, 1982. This one-year difference carries significant legal weight, particularly regarding her claim of becoming a U.S. citizen at age 17 when her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was naturalized.
"Trump has an unhealthy and creepy obsession with me. I represent everything Trump and today’s Republican Party seem to despise." Ilhan Omar, U.S. Representative
If the 1981 birthdate proves to be accurate, Representative Omar would have been an adult at the time her father received citizenship. This would mean she might not have qualified for the minor benefit that allowed her to obtain citizenship simultaneously with her parent. The Justice Department possesses the authority to revoke an individual's citizenship if investigators uncover problems with the naturalization papers filed, in Omar's case, in 2000. As of now, federal officials have not publicly announced any such findings or conclusions from their ongoing inquiry.
The investigation has seen recent developments, including a raid by federal agents on Representative Omar’s Washington, D.C., home on October 12. Just nine days later, on October 21, the Justice Department filed a court document that specifically identified her as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Investigators are reportedly examining whether Omar gained citizenship in 2000 under a false name or an incorrect birthdate. The inquiry also extends to cover the legal status of her father in the United States.
Representative Omar has publicly rejected the notion that the inquiry is a routine matter. In a recent interview with The Nation, she attributed the scrutiny to President Donald Trump, stating, "Trump has an unhealthy and creepy obsession with me. I represent everything Trump and today’s Republican Party seem to despise." She further elaborated on her identity, describing herself as "a woman, an immigrant, a refugee, a Muslim woman who wears a hijab, and someone who refuses to be intimidated into silence." According to Omar, President Trump and other Republicans direct "racism, Islamophobia, conspiracy theories, and lies" at her, which she believes serves to divert attention from "their own failures."
The Congresswoman drew parallels between the current scrutiny of her background and an earlier episode in American politics involving President Barack Obama. She compared President Trump’s interest in her personal history to his previous demands that President Obama produce his birth certificate, a controversy that President Obama addressed in 2011 by releasing the document to counter rumors he was born in Kenya. Reflecting on this, Omar stated, "President Obama knows the world of right-wing conspiracies better than anyone. In many ways, the conspiracy world I find myself in was created around him." She added, "That is why he can so clearly see the purpose and contradictions of the lies being told about me. He knows that no amount of evidence or facts will ever be enough for these trolls, because they are not after the truth. The conspiracy itself is what drives them."
This is not the first time Representative Omar has been the subject of a federal investigation. During the Obama administration, the Justice Department initiated a probe in 2016 into her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Elmi, whom reports described as her alleged brother. That investigation sought to determine if Omar married her brother to facilitate his acquisition of a green card. The probe concluded without charges, with authorities closing the case after determining that the alleged crime fell outside a five-year statute of limitations.
The current investigation by the Justice Department reaches back to the same period of her life, encompassing her 2000 naturalization, her 2009 marriage, and the 2016 inquiry, now alongside the recent October raid. Representative Omar remains under investigation by the Justice Department, and her congressional office has not issued any announcement indicating she will step aside from her duties.
