The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has initiated a civil forfeiture action to seize a Charlotte, North Carolina hotel, alleging the property was a persistent hub for drug and firearms trafficking. The case targets the Garden Inn & Suites, located off Sugar Creek Road and I-85, following a months-long joint investigation by the FBI and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) that documented extensive illegal activity.
"The hotel was used repeatedly as a location for illegal activity and is now subject to a forfeiture action aimed at transferring control of the property to the federal government." — U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson.
Federal prosecutors assert that the hotel was repeatedly utilized for illicit operations, leading to multiple arrests and the rare step of a civil forfeiture action. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson stated that the property is now subject to federal control due to its alleged role in facilitating ongoing criminal conduct. The legal action is based on claims that illegal activities persisted despite numerous law enforcement contacts and warnings issued to the hotel's management.
Investigators’ findings, detailed in court filings and federal affidavits, allege direct involvement of members of the hotel’s security team in drug and firearms sales. Undercover officers reportedly conducted controlled purchases over several months, confirming numerous transactions tied to individuals operating on or around the property. Authorities further allege that several security personnel possessed prior felony convictions, including for drug-related and violent offenses, and exploited their positions to facilitate or carry out illegal activities while on duty at the hotel. In some instances, transactions were reportedly conducted inside the property by individuals in security roles.
The comprehensive investigation employed surveillance, undercover operations, and coordinated enforcement efforts through the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, collaborating with local and state agencies. During the operation, officials reported seizing multiple firearms and narcotics, including fentanyl and cocaine base. These substances were allegedly distributed in and around the property over an extended period.
Police data cited in the case highlights a significant history of incidents at the hotel. Records indicate the property generated hundreds of service calls over a multi-year period, with more than 240 calls in a single year alone, according to The Center Square. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Estella D. Patterson emphasized that the property demanded repeated police responses, placing sustained strain on law enforcement resources.
Officials credited the coordinated efforts of federal, state, and local agencies for dismantling what they described as a long-running pattern of criminal activity centered at the location. Beyond the direct involvement of security staff, investigators also allege that hotel management had been previously informed about ongoing criminal activity and concerns regarding security staffing but failed to implement sufficient corrective measures. These warnings reportedly included concerns about individuals with criminal histories being employed in roles that granted them access to the property and its guests.
As a result of the investigation, five individuals currently face federal charges, with ten arrests made in total, and an additional suspect remaining at large. Six other individuals face state charges related to drug and firearms offenses. The civil forfeiture action seeks to transfer control of the Garden Inn & Suites to the federal government under civil forfeiture laws, which permit the seizure of assets allegedly linked to criminal activity. This measure is part of a broader federal enforcement strategy targeting properties that enable persistent criminal conduct. The case remains under federal prosecution as investigators continue to review evidence and pursue additional suspects connected to the operation. The FBI Charlotte field office confirmed the arrests and the civil forfeiture action recently, with social media posts from May 27-28, 2026, highlighting the joint operation with CMPD.
