Federal health officials are actively investigating a new outbreak of Cyclospora infections that has sickened at least 72 individuals across the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the addition of this new outbreak to its list of active foodborne illness investigations on Wednesday, July 23, 2026. The source of the contamination for this particular outbreak has not yet been identified, and investigators are undertaking extensive traceback efforts to pinpoint the origin of the infections.

The recalled lettuce products from this larger incident were distributed across dozens of states, leading to a widespread public health concern.
According to the FDA, the lettuce-associated outbreak has resulted in more than 4,000 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in 41 states. Additionally, health officials have identified approximately 7,400 suspected cases that are yet to be confirmed through laboratory testing. Two smaller Cyclospora investigations, involving two and eight illnesses respectively, have recently been concluded by the agency.
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that, when ingested, causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness. The condition commonly manifests with severe diarrhea and a range of other gastrointestinal symptoms, which can be debilitating. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that infections are most frequently reported during the late spring and summer months, typically between May and August. While international travelers can contract the parasite through contaminated food or water overseas, domestic outbreaks are more commonly linked to fresh produce.
Identifying the specific source of Cyclospora outbreaks presents significant challenges for health officials. Symptoms may not appear for a period ranging from two days to two weeks after exposure, making it difficult for affected individuals to recall specific food consumption patterns. Last year, for instance, federal investigators successfully linked a Cyclospora outbreak that sickened at least 69 people to contaminated parsley, demonstrating the complexity and time required for such investigations.

She explained that Cyclospora investigations often require substantial time because the parasite cannot be analyzed using whole genome sequencing, a technique routinely employed to trace other foodborne pathogens efficiently. Instead, investigators must rely on targeted genotyping. While this method can help detect related cases, it is generally less precise in identifying a specific food source, prolonging the investigative process.
Further complicating diagnosis and tracking, the CDC also points out that many Cyclospora infections likely go undiagnosed. This is partly because some individuals experience only mild symptoms and do not seek medical care. Moreover, standard stool tests may sometimes fail to detect the parasite, adding another layer of difficulty to accurate diagnosis and case confirmation.
Confirmed infections linked to the larger lettuce outbreak have been reported in at least 34 states. Epidemiological evidence has connected cases in Michigan and Ohio to illnesses in West Virginia and Kentucky, indicating the broad reach of the contaminated product. The FDA's investigation into the newly identified 72-case outbreak remains ongoing as officials intensify their efforts to identify the contaminated food responsible for these recent illnesses.
In light of these ongoing outbreaks, health authorities continue to advise consumers to take precautions to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
