U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced on Tuesday that her office has initiated a federal investigation into the financial disclosures of Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District. The inquiry specifically scrutinizes the financial activities and rapid valuation increase of businesses associated with Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett. This development closely followed a federal raid on Representative Omar’s home, which authorities stated was connected to a broader, ongoing investigation into her immigration records.

The core of the financial inquiry centers on a substantial reported surge in the value of Mr. Mynett's businesses. According to reports, these businesses were valued at approximately $51,000 in 2023. By 2024, their combined worth reportedly escalated to roughly $30 million. This significant increase was highlighted in the congresswoman’s latest financial disclosure, which AM Update covered in September. The disclosure listed Mr. Mynett's net worth ranging between $6 million and $30 million. A substantial portion of this reported value is attributed to his stake in Rose Lake Capital, a venture capital firm reportedly valued between $5 million and $25 million. An additional $1 million to $5 million is reportedly tied to a California winery stake. These ventures were characterized as being nearly worthless in 2023, according to the same reports.
In addition to the federal investigation, attorneys for the House Oversight Committee have launched their own review into the rapid growth of the couple’s finances. Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, informed the New York Post that his attorneys are actively considering issuing a subpoena for Mr. Mynett. The Post also reported that Mr. Mynett's consulting firm has conducted business with various Democratic-aligned organizations. Furthermore, the FBI reportedly received a briefing during the Biden administration concerning a network of companies linked to Mr. Mynett. Chairman Comer emphasized the committee's focus on these reports, noting the substantial increase in the couple's net worth from near zero to a range of $6 million to $30 million within a single year.
Mr. Mynett’s business history includes launching Rose Lake Capital as his second private firm with business partner Hailer, as reported by the Washington Free Beacon. Their initial venture, eSt Ventures, faced a lawsuit from two South Dakota cannabis companies. The plaintiffs in that case alleged that the partners diverted $1.7 million of a $3.5 million investment for purposes other than those initially stated. Former Montana Democrat Max Baucus was once listed as an adviser on eSt Ventures' website. Mr. Baucus told the New York Post that he had a single phone conversation with Mynett’s business partner in 2022 regarding a potential deal.
Mr. Mynett previously served as a consultant for Representative Omar’s campaign. The two married in 2020. The Free Beacon reported that approximately $2.9 million from Omar’s campaign was directed to Mr. Mynett's company, E Street Group. Representative Omar and Mr. Mynett have also made appearances together at events hosted by the EBII Group, a company specializing in facilitating international investments in Africa, according to the Free Beacon.
President Donald Trump has publicly commented on the situation, writing on Truth Social that the Justice Department and Congress are examining Omar’s finances. President Trump also stated that Representative Omar is reportedly worth over $44 million. In a separate post, President Trump called for an investigation into Omar for "Financial and Political Crimes," asserting her worth exceeds $30 million. Representative Omar responded to these claims in a post of her own, stating, "Years of ‘investigations’ have found nothing." The Free Beacon noted that Representative Omar continues to deny being worth millions of dollars, despite filing a disclosure reporting her family’s holdings upward of $30 million.
Federal authorities in Minnesota have been engaged for years in investigating some of the largest alleged public-funds fraud schemes in the country. Representative Omar has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with those specific cases. As of the current reporting, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has not announced any charges against Representative Omar or Mr. Mynett related to the ongoing financial inquiry. The duration of Pirro’s investigation and investigators' next steps remain undisclosed.
