Charlotte County, Florida — Malia Nummerdor, a 38-year-old mother of two, was arrested on September 15 and charged with sexual contact with an animal, following allegations made by her estranged husband. The unusual criminal case has drawn attention in Southwest Florida, with new developments emerging as a GoFundMe campaign seeks to raise funds for Nummerdor’s legal defense.
The investigation began after Erik Nummerdor, Malia’s estranged husband, publicly accused her on Facebook before formally involving law enforcement. According to charging paperwork filed by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, Erik Nummerdor provided investigators with security footage he claimed to have captured inside their shared home.
The origin of the surveillance effort, Erik Nummerdor told deputies, was unrelated to the eventual allegations. Months prior, he had mounted two cameras inside the residence in an attempt to identify who was repeatedly raiding a jar of loose change. He stated that every member of the household was aware of the running devices. The focus of the surveillance dramatically shifted when Erik reviewed footage from a bedroom camera, which he told investigators appeared to show Malia engaged in a sex act involving the family’s dog, a pet named Ranger.
Investigators did not solely rely on Erik Nummerdor’s statements. He surrendered both the recording and the laptop storing it, providing police with what they described as an "independent source of corroboration beyond Erik’s statements."
Malia Nummerdor was interviewed by officers on the same day she was booked. Police noted that she appeared impaired during questioning, informing them she had been drinking or using drugs prior to the interview. Her account, as detailed in the arrest report, strongly contested the accusation. Police wrote that "when asked to explain the dog’s proximity to her genital area, Nummerdor denied sexual conduct and claimed she had merely been lying with and petting her elderly dog near its bed." Detectives, however, noted that her explanation grew shakier under further questioning. The report states that "when asked to clarify her physical position and the dog’s placement between her legs, Nummerdor was unable to provide any coherent or consistent explanation." She reportedly directed detectives to a second dog also present in the bedroom that night.
Following her booking, photos taken at the Charlotte County Jail showed Malia Nummerdor smiling broadly. She was released from custody a short time later, and no additional charges have been announced in connection with the incident.
Outside the courtroom, a separate effort has commenced to support Malia Nummerdor. A GoFundMe fundraiser, launched earlier this week, portrays her as the true victim of the situation. The campaign’s organizers described her marriage to Erik as having "collapsed into something vengeful and destructive." They wrote, "Malia’s lives — along with her sons’ — have been turned upside down following a painful and difficult situation involving Malia’s estranged husband and allegations against her that she maintains are untrue." The fundraiser states that the family has since been forced out of their home. According to the campaign, Malia Nummerdor has no living parents and grew up without siblings, leading a circle of friends to rally around her during this crisis.
The organizers emphasized the gravity of the allegations, stating, "Malia is facing serious allegations, and she needs experienced legal representation to ensure that she has the opportunity to fully address them through the proper legal process, adding that her sons deserve privacy, stability, and as much normalcy as possible while the adults involved work through what comes next."
