The extensive investigation commenced in late 2021 when a teenager reported alleged inappropriate conduct involving Gledhill to authorities. The report detailed events that purportedly occurred when the victim was 15 years old. Following this initial report, investigators identified two additional alleged victims, prompting a search of Gledhill’s Lompoc home in February 2022. During the search, thousands of digital files were collected and subsequently reviewed by law enforcement. This digital evidence, combined with further interviews, led investigators to identify a total of nine alleged victims, all of whom were minors at the time of the alleged offenses.
According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, Gledhill allegedly contacted many of these minors through online casting calls and filmmaking opportunities. He reportedly used the professional names “Shane Ryan” and “Shane Ryan-Reid” to establish contact with aspiring actors and filmmakers, allegedly exploiting his involvement in the independent film industry as a means to gain access to vulnerable individuals rather than for legitimate professional purposes. Public film databases show Gledhill has an extensive résumé, with credits in over 100 acting roles and more than 150 production projects. He has worked on productions alongside established actors such as Shelley Duvall, Richard Dreyfuss, Ed Harris, and Tom Arnold.
Prosecutors have accused Gledhill of a range of serious felony offenses, including child molestation, rape, forcible sexual assault, contacting a minor for the purpose of committing a sexual offense, possession of child sexual abuse material, and providing harmful material to a minor. The charges remain allegations, and court proceedings are ongoing.
Investigators noted that Gledhill maintained a significant online presence under his professional identities, including Instagram accounts (@madsincinema, @talkhardcinema, @shaneryanreid, @shaneryanreidfilms), a Facebook account ("Shane Ryan-Reid"), and various websites related to his filmmaking work. Authorities released Gledhill’s booking photo and urged anyone who may have interacted with him under his professional names and might not know his legal name to come forward.
The alleged offenses are believed to have occurred over two decades and potentially involve individuals from multiple regions. While the initial reports originated in California’s Central Coast and Los Angeles area, investigators suggest that potential victims or witnesses could also be located on the East Coast. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that the case remains active and is actively seeking information from any additional potential victims or witnesses. They encourage anyone with information regarding Gledhill or his alleged activities to contact their investigators.
The arrest and subsequent charges highlight the persistent challenges law enforcement faces in combating child exploitation, particularly when perpetrators leverage professional networks and online platforms to target minors. The ongoing nature of the investigation underscores the commitment of authorities to pursue justice for alleged victims and to identify anyone else who may have been impacted.
