A new investigation by The Daily Wire has brought renewed scrutiny to alleged connections between the family of Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and individuals implicated in Minnesota’s extensive "Feeding Our Future" federal fraud case. The investigation centers on Sahra Noor, Rep. Omar's sister, and her consulting business, Grit Partners Consulting, which reportedly utilized a residential address linked to individuals convicted in the multi-million dollar scheme. It is important to note that no criminal charges have been filed against either Rep. Omar or Sahra Noor in connection with this case.
"federal prosecutors have described [the Feeding Our Future case] as one of the largest COVID-19-related fraud schemes in the country." — Federal Prosecutors
The "Feeding Our Future" case has been described by federal prosecutors as one of the largest COVID-19-related fraud schemes in the United States. It involved allegations that dozens of defendants fraudulently obtained millions of dollars from a federally funded child nutrition program. This program, designed to provide meals to children in need, was allegedly exploited through false claims for reimbursement, with funds often diverted for personal use. Several defendants have already pleaded guilty or been convicted, while others continue to contest the charges in federal court.
According to The Daily Wire's report, Sahra Noor registered Grit Partners Consulting using a residential address in Lakeville, Minnesota. State incorporation records reviewed by the outlet indicate that this home is owned by Mashah Ahmed Ali and his wife, Ister Ahmed Afraa, also known as Ismahan Ahmed Afraa. The investigation further alleges that Afraa established multiple businesses with Hanna Marekegn, who pleaded guilty in 2022 to wire fraud directly related to the Feeding Our Future scheme. Federal prosecutors stated that Marekegn falsely claimed to serve thousands of children through meal distribution sites, subsequently diverting millions of dollars for personal gain. Court records cited in the report confirm Marekegn admitted to submitting these fraudulent claims.
The report also highlights Afraa's business ties to Aimee Bock, the founder of Feeding Our Future, who was later convicted and sentenced in the fraud case. State records cited by The Daily Wire reportedly listed Bock as a contact person for one of Afraa’s organizations, further suggesting a network of connections among the individuals involved in the fraudulent activities. Another individual, Sahra Nur (distinct from Sahra Noor), who later pleaded guilty in the federal fraud investigation, was reportedly associated with Sunshine Care Center and introduced to Feeding Our Future. The investigation stresses that Sahra Nur and Sahra Noor are different individuals.
The Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee has reportedly been examining possible connections involving Rep. Omar. However, the committee was unable to obtain records from the congresswoman after Democratic members blocked a proposed subpoena in May, according to The Daily Wire's report. This action has drawn criticism from those advocating for greater transparency and accountability in investigations involving public funds.
Grit Partners Consulting, founded by Sahra Noor, previously worked in Minnesota’s healthcare sector. Its website reportedly claims to have secured more than $20 million for public health initiatives and consulted on projects supported by various international and federal organizations, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Gavi, and the World Bank. The investigation noted that Noor later relocated to Africa after leaving her position at People’s Center Clinics & Services, but Grit Partners has continued its consulting work on projects funded by international organizations, including USAID.
The ongoing scrutiny underscores the complexities of combating large-scale fraud, particularly when it involves federally funded programs. The alleged connections, even without direct charges against Noor, add a layer of public interest and political dimension to an already significant fraud case, prompting calls for continued thorough investigation and transparency.
