Mikhaila Peterson, daughter of Canadian clinical psychologist and author Dr. Jordan Peterson, revealed on Saturday through a social media post on X that her father has been silently contending with a significant and debilitating medical condition. The update, accompanied by a 35-minute video, detailed a year-long health struggle that she attributed, in part, to a medication-linked neurological injury, alongside other severe complications.
"I made this video to explain what they are and what akathisia is because they’re not talked about enough, they’re misdiagnosed, nearly impossible to treat, and hidden by the pharmaceutical industry." — Mikhaila Peterson
According to Mikhaila Peterson, her father's health issues began last summer, following a flare-up that physicians believed was likely triggered by mold exposure and stress. This event was connected to a diagnosis Dr. Peterson had received in August 2025: chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). However, the situation quickly escalated beyond the initial CIRS flare-up. The family later identified that Dr. Peterson had sustained what Mikhaila described as a psychiatric medication-induced neurological injury. This diagnosis came despite the fact that Dr. Peterson had not taken any such medications for six years prior to the onset of these symptoms.
The health crisis was further complicated by a series of cascading infections. Within a month of the initial flare-up, Dr. Peterson contracted pneumonia, which subsequently progressed into sepsis, a potentially fatal systemic inflammatory response. Mikhaila Peterson characterized the entire experience as "horrible." Beyond the infections and the CIRS diagnosis, Dr. Peterson has also been battling akathisia, a movement disorder marked by an overwhelming internal restlessness and an inability to remain still.
Mikhaila Peterson used her platform to highlight what she perceives as a lack of attention from the broader medical community regarding akathisia and similar conditions. She directly charged that the pharmaceutical industry actively works to keep such medication-induced injuries out of public discourse. "I made this video to explain what they are and what akathisia is because they’re not talked about enough, they’re misdiagnosed, nearly impossible to treat, and hidden by the pharmaceutical industry," she wrote in her post. She also confirmed that her own health has been impacted by psychiatric medication injuries, lending a personal dimension to her advocacy on the issue.
Despite the gravity of her disclosure, Mikhaila Peterson informed her followers that she does not intend to provide further updates on her father's condition. She explained that media attention surrounding his health places a significant burden on the family. "I don’t plan on making another update about my dad, it stresses my family out, and myself, and there’s nothing more to say about it until things get better," she stated, adding, "Prayers are appreciated still." In a subsequent post, she issued a direct warning to individuals currently taking psychiatric medications, particularly long-term benzodiazepine users, urging them not to make sudden decisions about discontinuing their prescriptions based on her video. "Do your research but don’t get concerned from this video and destabilize a stable situation without knowing the risks," she advised.
Dr. Jordan Peterson gained widespread public recognition and became a prominent figure for conservative audiences starting in 2017. This was largely due to his refusal to use non-binary pronouns, a stance that led to funding cuts from Canadian academic institutions and propelled him onto the international stage as a vocal critic of compelled speech. His engagements with institutional authorities have continued over the years. In August 2023, a Canadian court upheld a mandate from the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) requiring Dr. Peterson to undergo sensitivity training. This requirement stemmed from statements he made on a podcast and commentary he posted on social media concerning transgenderism. While Dr. Peterson initially declared he would not comply with the order, he later reversed his position and agreed to proceed. He publicly addressed the dispute in an interview, stating, "I released all the documents that included the charges, so to speak, that the College [has] levied against me. I want to make this 100% transparent that led to the public decide for themselves who exactly is acting, let’s say, in an unprofessional capacity."
The recent health update from his daughter adds another layer to the public understanding of a figure who has frequently found himself at the center of cultural and political debates.
