An American Airlines flight from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) was forced to divert Thursday night after a passenger allegedly engaged in a racist and anti-gay tirade before becoming violent. The disturbance prompted the flight crew and other passengers to restrain the individual with duct tape and zip ties, leading to an unscheduled landing at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).
According to reports from TMZ, which obtained video and photographs from inside the aircraft, the incident began when an unidentified male passenger, who appeared intoxicated, started shouting at a fellow traveler. Witnesses described the passenger yelling about religious themes before a Black flight attendant approached to de-escalate the situation. The confrontation reportedly escalated further, with the passenger allegedly directing a racial slur at the flight attendant and making anti-gay remarks.
The situation then reportedly turned physical. Sources indicated the passenger struck an individual seated next to him and damaged that person's computer. A female passenger attempted to intervene but was allegedly pushed by the disruptive traveler. At this point, three male passengers stepped in to assist the flight crew. Flight attendants provided duct tape and zip ties, which were then used by the passengers and crew to restrain the man to his seat. Photographs from the cabin showed the individual extensively wrapped in duct tape around his upper body and head, with his hands also secured. Video footage reportedly captured the man attempting to break free from the restraints.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the diversion. The aircraft landed in Baltimore approximately 15 minutes after the decision to change course was made. Upon arrival at the gate, law enforcement officers were present and took the passenger into custody. An FBI spokesperson informed TMZ that Maryland Transportation Police arrested and booked the man on state charges. The identity of the individual and the specific state charges he faces have not yet been publicly disclosed.
Federal authorities are also actively examining the episode. The FBI stated it is gathering information about the events that transpired aboard the aircraft and is consulting with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland. This consultation will determine whether federal charges should be pursued in addition to the state-level charges already filed. Disruptive behavior aboard commercial aircraft can fall under federal scrutiny, particularly if the conduct interferes with flight crew members, which is a violation of federal aviation laws. Such federal charges can be pursued alongside any state-level assault or disorderly conduct charges.
This incident is one of several highly publicized cases of passenger disturbances that have forced commercial flights to divert in recent times. In a separate event in March, a Southwest Airlines flight from Nashville to Fort Lauderdale was diverted due to a reported security threat. American Airlines itself has experienced other viral passenger disturbances, including a 2023 incident involving passenger Tiffany Gomas, whose outburst on a flight departing Dallas led to passengers being deplaned for a security check.
The use of duct tape as an emergency restraint has also occurred in previous situations where passengers became violent or could not otherwise be safely controlled. In another American Airlines case earlier in 2024, passengers used duct tape to restrain a man who authorities said attempted to open an aircraft door mid-flight. In the Thursday night incident, the swift action by passengers and flight attendants enabled the aircraft to make a rapid diversion to Baltimore without any immediate reports of serious injuries. Authorities have not yet made an announcement regarding potential federal charges.
