A Flydubai flight carrying approximately 160 to 180 passengers, mostly Israeli citizens, experienced a violent confrontation in its cockpit on Wednesday, leading to an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Flydubai Flight 1073, en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv, reportedly plunged thousands of feet after one pilot allegedly stabbed a co-pilot and attempted to crash the aircraft.
"I salute these heroes, who demonstrated extraordinary resourcefulness and courage. They saved many lives and prevented a disaster." Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister
The incident unfolded rapidly, triggering emergency alerts from the jet. Initial flight-tracking data showed the aircraft transmitting emergency code 7700, indicating a general emergency. This code reportedly later changed to 7500, a signal for hijacking or unlawful interference, before reverting to the general emergency code. Israeli fighter jets were scrambled, and senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, held emergency consultations as the situation developed.
Prime Minister Netanyahu later confirmed details of the harrowing event, stating one pilot stabbed the other and "apparently attempted to crash the plane with its passengers on board." The aircraft was forced to reverse course near the Saudi-Jordanian border and made an emergency landing at approximately 9:45 a.m. local time in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
According to reports, the situation escalated dramatically when passengers onboard realized a critical incident was unfolding in the cockpit. Prime Minister Netanyahu recounted an Israeli passenger's account of forcing entry into the cockpit alongside a crew member. This passenger, identified in a tweet from the Israel Foreign Ministry as helping Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian captain of Flydubai Flight 1073, then allegedly assisted in overpowering the attacking pilot. Captain Machchhar, despite being severely injured, reportedly managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling the intervention. The attacking pilot was reportedly interfering with the aircraft’s systems when subdued.
"I salute these heroes, who demonstrated extraordinary resourcefulness and courage," Netanyahu stated. "They saved many lives and prevented a disaster."
Passengers described scenes of panic inside the cabin as the aircraft descended sharply. Travelers reportedly rushed towards the front of the plane, and some assisted in subduing the alleged attacker while guarding the wounded captain as the plane approached Saudi Arabia. Videos reportedly recorded aboard the aircraft depicted bloodied passengers and an injured man following the confrontation, though none of the passengers required immediate medical treatment upon their eventual arrival in Israel, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service.
Upon landing in Tabuk, Saudi authorities immediately took the alleged attacking pilot into custody. Both pilots involved in the altercation were hospitalized at the Tabuk airport, having sustained injuries during the incident. Saudi authorities have commenced questioning the alleged attacker as investigators work to determine the precise cause and motive behind the confrontation.
Flydubai confirmed that an altercation occurred aboard Flight 1073 but has released limited information regarding the specifics of how the incident began. A spokesperson for the airline stated that members of the crew were able to secure the aircraft, ensuring its safe landing.
The motive behind the alleged attack remains unclear and is the subject of an ongoing investigation. Israeli authorities are reportedly examining several possible explanations, including whether the incident was an attempted attack targeting Israeli passengers, a suicide attempt by the pilot, or motivated by personal reasons. Officials have not publicly determined if the confrontation was ideologically driven. Despite the violent struggle and the aircraft’s sharp descent, the plane landed safely, averting a mass-casualty disaster. A replacement aircraft was subsequently arranged to transport the passengers from Saudi Arabia to Tel Aviv.
