Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Malibu residence of Kamala Harris on Friday night following reports of a suspicious individual on the property. Security personnel intercepted the person who had illegally entered the grounds, preventing them from reaching the main residence, according to an Associated Press report. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. when security personnel contacted authorities.

Ms. Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were not at their $8.1 million Malibu home when the security breach occurred, confirmed spokesman Eduardo Negrón. "Last night, security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff’s property before the individual reached the home," Negrón stated. He added that the couple expressed gratitude to both the security officers and law enforcement for their prompt response.
Upon arrival, deputies contacted the unidentified individual outside the property. The person complied with instructions to leave voluntarily, and the encounter concluded without further incident or an arrest. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department subsequently filed a trespassing report. As a precautionary measure, deputies from the local station will increase patrols around the residence, CBS News reported.
Authorities have not publicly identified the trespasser or disclosed a potential motive for the unauthorized entry. Details regarding how the individual gained access to the outer grounds of the property also remain unclear, as does the reason for allowing the person to leave without being cited. The Malibu property was acquired by Ms. Harris and Mr. Emhoff in May for approximately $8.1 million. This security incident follows previous discussions and changes regarding Ms. Harris's federal protection. Typically, former vice presidents receive Secret Service protection for six months after leaving office, while former presidents are granted lifetime protection.
Former President Joe Biden had extended Ms. Harris's federal protection beyond the standard six-month period before he left the White House. However, President Donald Trump revoked that extension in August 2025, which would have otherwise continued through the summer of 2026. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass publicly criticized President Trump's decision at the time, arguing that removing the extension placed Ms. Harris at increased risk, as reported by the New York Post. Since the expiration of her extended federal protection, Ms. Harris has relied on private security services.
