Photographer Scott Vander Dussen, who was filming nearby, captured the entire sequence. According to Vander Dussen, the ocean had been calm for much of the day before conditions rapidly deteriorated. He observed the boy vanish into the churn approximately 200 meters from the shoreline, recalling, "He was just sucked out." He added, "We then saw the kid’s head bobbing up and down."
Without hesitation, the teenage lifeguard immediately entered the pounding surf alone, battling strong currents to reach the struggling child. Vander Dussen described the rescue as extraordinary, remarking, "It is unbelievable." The lifeguard, identified only by his age and profession, managed to pull the boy back through the same treacherous currents that had swept him away, bringing both safely to shore. Both individuals emerged from the water shaken but unharmed.
Upon reaching dry sand, Vander Dussen briefly spoke with both the rescuer and the rescued boy. Remarkably, after catching his breath, the lifeguard returned to his post to complete the remainder of his shift.
