A Rhode Island couple's anticipated acquisition of a Trump-branded timepiece turned into a prolonged dispute over a manufacturing defect, culminating in a partial resolution after media involvement. Tim Petit, a resident of Middletown, Rhode Island, purchased a $640 watch online, intending it as a special gift for his wife, Melanie, a supporter of President Donald Trump.
"I’m very disappointed. I wanted to do a special thing for her. And we expected that it would have the integrity of the President of the United States and good follow-through." — Tim Petit, Middletown Resident
The purchase was prompted by a radio advertisement featuring President Trump's voice, promoting luxury watches available through GetTrumpWatches.com. Petit visited the website and selected a pink watch, described as a limited-edition collector's item with only 250 units reportedly produced. The watch featured President Trump's signature and fireworks imagery, making the purchase feel exclusive and significant to the couple.
Upon the watch's arrival, Melanie Petit opened the package and immediately noticed a significant flaw. The watch face, intended to display President Trump's surname, was missing its initial letter, rendering "TRUMP" as "RUMP." Melanie Petit expressed her dismay, stating, "I noticed it right away. How could they process this and go through something without checking their work?" Her husband, Tim, echoed her frustration regarding the quality control lapse. "I’m very disappointed. I wanted to do a special thing for her. And we expected that it would have the integrity of the President of the United States and good follow-through," he told local NBC affiliate WJAR.
The couple attempted to resolve the issue directly with the company, but their initial messages reportedly went unanswered. Days passed without a response from the watchmaker, leaving the Petits without a corrected product, an apology, or a clear path forward, as the company's stated policy indicated all sales were final. Tim Petit articulated their demands to WJAR, stating, "We would like this corrected properly and quickly. [And] an apology would be nice for making my wife cry."
The situation changed when the Petits shared their story with WJAR. Within hours of the station contacting the company, the silence ended. The watchmaker issued an apology to the couple and offered a replacement watch, this time with President Trump's surname correctly spelled. Additionally, the company provided an $800 store credit.
However, the store credit came with specific limitations. It was not a cash refund or a transferable gift card but functioned solely as credit applicable to another purchase on the same platform. Comparable women's watches available on the GetTrumpWatches.com website were priced at $899, meaning the Petits would still need to spend an additional $99 out of pocket to acquire a replacement watch of similar value, even after receiving the $800 offer.
The promotional materials for GetTrumpWatches.com heavily feature President Trump. A video on the website prominently displays President Trump standing before American flags, where he declares, "Hello everyone, it’s President Donald J. Trump, and it’s Trump Time." He then encourages viewers to "Get your watch today!" Despite this prominent branding, the website's fine print clarifies that GetTrumpWatches.com operates under a paid license from CIC Digital LLC and explicitly states it is "not designed, owned, managed, or controlled by Donald J Trump, The Trump Organization, CIC Digital LLC, or any of their respective principals or affiliates." This distinction highlights that while the product leverages President Trump's image, it is not directly affiliated with his administration or personal business entities.
The Petits' experience underscores the complexities consumers can face when purchasing branded merchandise, particularly concerning quality control and customer service responsiveness from third-party vendors. The incident garnered attention on social media, with one user noting the irony of the defect: "$640 for Trump watches shipping without the 'T'. I mean, people call him that all the time, but now Trump’s own watches call him 'Rump'. You can’t make this stuff up!" The Daily Mail reportedly reached out to the Petits, the company, and the White House for comment on the matter.
