A controversial cryptocurrency livestream video depicting a masked individual purportedly holding a goldfish at gunpoint has recently resurfaced across online platforms. The footage, which allegedly led to a significant financial gain for the streamer, highlights ongoing challenges in content moderation within the rapidly evolving digital asset space.
The video originated on Pump.fun, a platform designed to facilitate the creation and trading of memecoins, often accompanied by livestreams intended to attract potential buyers. A viral post on X presented the clip as a recent event, asserting that the streamer earned around $250,000 from the stunt. However, no established source has independently verified the creator’s identity, the exact earnings, or the associated cryptocurrency wallet. Earlier reports indicate the underlying footage likely dates to November 2024, not 2026 as some recent posts suggested.
During the livestream, the masked creator displayed a fish in a transparent bag while aiming what appeared to be a firearm towards it. Reports from the time indicated the streamer threatened to kill the animal unless traders propelled their associated memecoin to a $1 million market capitalization. The ultimate fate of the goldfish has not been independently established, and it remains unclear whether the weapon used in the broadcast was real or a prop.
This particular incident was one of several extreme broadcasts that drew significant outrage surrounding Pump.fun in late 2024. Protos, a cryptocurrency news outlet, documented the goldfish incident alongside other livestreams featuring firearms, animals, and explicit threats of violence. In one reported instance, a creator allegedly fired a handgun inside their home whenever their token’s value increased. Another disturbing video reportedly showed a child holding a shotgun and threatening family members unless their coin reached a $60,000 market capitalization. Other creators resorted to taping animals to walls, threatening dogs, or staging violent acts, all in an effort to capture traders’ attention and boost their memecoin’s visibility and value. A group operating under the name "Chicken Fight Club" was also reported to have killed a chicken during one of their broadcasts.
The escalating controversy and the proliferation of such "deeply concerning content" prompted Pump.fun to suspend its livestreaming feature in November 2024. At the time, the company acknowledged the issues, stating that its moderation systems required significant improvement. Following a period of review and policy implementation, Pump.fun eventually restored livestreaming functionalities, albeit with additional rules and enhanced moderation measures. The platform's updated policy explicitly prohibits animal cruelty, violence, threats, and dangerous conduct.
Despite these new regulations, financial incentives remain a core component of Pump.fun’s livestreaming model. The platform introduced a dynamic creator-fee system as part of a major overhaul known as Project Ascend in September 2025. Under this new structure, token creators receive a percentage of the fees generated whenever investors trade their coins. According to Decrypt, the updated system distributed approximately $2 million to creators in its first 24 hours, a substantial increase compared to the $198,000 distributed under the previous structure the day prior. Creators behind tokens valued between approximately $88,000 and $300,000 can receive 0.95% of each trade. While this percentage decreases as a token’s market capitalization rises, higher trading volumes can still result in substantial earnings. One creator reportedly claimed about $80,000 after the fee change, and a livestreaming duo known as Bagwork generated over $80,000 in fees by playing songs by popular rappers.
These documented payouts demonstrate that Pump.fun broadcasts can indeed generate significant income for creators. However, they do not independently confirm the specific claim that the goldfish streamer earned $250,000. Verifying such a payment would necessitate identifying the specific memecoin involved, authenticating the creator’s cryptocurrency wallet, and meticulously reviewing the relevant transactions on the blockchain. Memecoins typically lack underlying revenue streams, products, or conventional valuation metrics, with their prices often driven by online attention, community enthusiasm, and speculative trading, making viral spectacles a potentially powerful, albeit controversial, market tool.
