Washington D.C. — Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and a prominent philanthropist, revealed in a closed-door congressional interview that he had been unfaithful during his marriage to Melinda French Gates and that Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender, later attempted to blackmail him using this sensitive information. The revelations were part of prepared testimony provided to House lawmakers, as the House Oversight Committee continues its comprehensive review into the government's handling of investigations involving Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.
"I learned Epstein had become aware of sensitive information about my personal life, including the fact that I had been unfaithful in my marriage." — Bill Gates, Microsoft Co-founder
According to the testimony, Gates stated that Epstein became aware of details regarding his personal life, including his marital infidelity, after their initial acquaintanceship through philanthropic and business circles. "I learned Epstein had become aware of sensitive information about my personal life, including the fact that I had been unfaithful in my marriage," Gates stated. He emphasized that "These affairs had nothing to do with my interactions with Epstein, but they were painful for my family."
Gates appeared before the committee following the public release of various documents, which included photographs, emails, and records detailing his past interactions with Epstein. He maintained that he never engaged in any illegal conduct and asserted that he severed ties with Epstein in 2014, concluding that the association had been a significant error.
The billionaire philanthropist testified that Epstein, after their relationship began to deteriorate, attempted to exploit this personal information. Gates alleged that Epstein used the details of his infidelity, alongside what Gates described as false claims, in an unsuccessful bid to pressure him into maintaining contact. "He was unsuccessful in this effort, but it shows some of the ways he tried to leverage his interactions with me to further his agenda," Gates recounted to lawmakers.
Gates first met Epstein in 2011, having been introduced to the financier under the premise that Epstein could assist with fundraising for global public health initiatives. At that time, Epstein had already pleaded guilty in Florida to charges related to the solicitation of a minor. Gates acknowledged that while he was aware of Epstein's legal troubles, he did not fully comprehend the extent of his criminal conduct when their paths first crossed. "I accepted the introduction without applying the scrutiny I should have," Gates admitted. He reiterated that his interactions with Epstein were limited and concluded three years later.
These recent admissions come years after Gates publicly characterized his association with Epstein as a major mistake. Following their divorce in 2021, Melinda French Gates publicly cited Epstein as a contributing factor to the tensions within their marriage, describing him as "abhorrent."
Questions surrounding Gates' relationship with Epstein intensified after previously undisclosed photographs and emails became public through government document releases and ongoing congressional investigations. Among these records were communications that Gates has disputed, including claims concerning his personal relationships and allegations he has consistently denied. Gates has repeatedly maintained that he never visited Epstein’s private island and never participated in any criminal activity linked to the financier.
Jeffrey Epstein was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges involving underage girls. He died by suicide in a New York jail cell while awaiting trial. The House Oversight Committee has continued its examination of records connected to Epstein, Maxwell, and individuals who interacted with them. A full transcript of Gates' congressional interview is anticipated to be released following the committee's review. Lawmakers from both major parties have indicated their intention to continue questioning witnesses to fully understand the scope of Epstein's network and influence.
