Jean Gragg, a 40-year-old woman from South Bend, Indiana, died on Saturday, June 15, after sustaining critical injuries in a shooting that occurred on June 10. Authorities have since charged 18-year-old John Harrison Ford with murder in connection with the incident. The shooting transpired during what began as a Facebook Marketplace transaction involving Gragg’s son. Ford is currently held at the St. Joseph County Jail as legal proceedings continue.
The tragic encounter commenced when Ford arrived at Gragg’s residence, located in the 2600 block of Mac Arthur Boulevard within the Edison Park neighborhood. Gragg’s son had arranged to sell a watch via Facebook Marketplace, and Ford reportedly met him at the home to finalize the transaction. According to court documents and statements from investigators, the situation quickly escalated when Ford allegedly brandished a firearm while inspecting the watch, then attempted to take it by force.
As the confrontation intensified outside the family home, Jean Gragg witnessed the dispute and intervened. Officials stated that Gragg positioned herself between Ford and her son, reportedly attempting to de-escalate the situation and push Ford away from the property. Surveillance video reviewed by investigators is said to corroborate witness accounts describing a rapidly escalating confrontation. Following this initial interaction, Ford left the immediate vicinity. However, surveillance footage reportedly shows him returning moments later. Authorities stated that Ford then fired multiple shots toward the residence as Gragg moved back toward the home. She was struck in the head and collapsed at the scene.
Ford immediately fled the area after the shooting. Law enforcement later recovered a firearm believed to be connected to the incident near Cedar Glen Apartments. Additional surveillance footage played a crucial role in helping investigators track Ford’s movements subsequent to the shooting. Police located and interviewed Ford at the South Bend Police Department, where he was subsequently taken into custody. Investigators reported that Ford initially denied his involvement but later acknowledged having arranged the Marketplace meeting and bringing a firearm to the encounter. Court documents indicate that Ford told investigators he discharged the weapon during the incident before fleeing the scene and discarding the firearm. His statements, combined with the surveillance video evidence and physical evidence, supported the upgraded charges following Gragg’s death.
John Harrison Ford now faces charges including murder, attempted murder, and attempted armed robbery, along with firearm enhancements. Prosecutors have indicated that additional charges may be filed as the case progresses through the St. Joseph County court system.
Following the shooting, Gragg was transported to Memorial Hospital and admitted to intensive care. A GoFundMe page, organized by a relative identified as Robert Stout, was established to help cover medical and funeral expenses. The page noted that Gragg was removed from life support on June 13. As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser had surpassed $2,000. An obituary described Gragg as a dedicated mother who found joy in reading, traveling with her son, camping, and spending time with friends. It highlighted her nurturing presence, her care for others when they were ill, and her deep devotion to her family. This incident underscores the inherent risks associated with online marketplace transactions, prompting renewed discussions about implementing enhanced safety protocols for such exchanges.
