The incident began when family members, unable to reach the Blairs by phone, contacted authorities to request a welfare check at the couple's residence. Simpson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the Mendenhall home at approximately 12:24 p.m. Upon their arrival at the property, deputies were immediately met with gunfire. Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bailey Martin confirmed that the situation rapidly escalated, with both law enforcement officers and civilians in the immediate vicinity becoming trapped under fire, unable to move safely.
Martin identified the unfolding event as an active burglary already in progress when the first responders arrived on the scene. Inside the home, deputies discovered the bodies of Billy and Virginia Carol Blair. The armed individual, later identified as Cordarius Hobbs, was still inside the residence.
During the subsequent standoff, Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey reported that Hobbs made direct contact with officers. He reportedly promised to surrender by walking out the front door, but he did not follow through. Instead, Hobbs attempted to flee the scene by bolting out the back of the house, prompting a scramble by deputies in pursuit. During the foot chase, one deputy was struck by a bullet, sustaining injuries. The pursuit concluded when a Mississippi state trooper fired upon Hobbs, wounding him and bringing the violent episode to an end.
Hobbs was subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Prosecutors have moved swiftly to file charges against the teenager. Hobbs faces a comprehensive list of charges, including two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Additionally, he faces two counts of aggravated assault specifically targeting victims over the age of 65, reflecting the age of the deceased couple.
The Blair family released a statement via Facebook, expressing their profound grief and resilience. "We are crushed in spirit, bruised, and brokenhearted, but we are not alone," the statement read, conveying the depth of their loss while acknowledging community support.
Friends and neighbors remembered Billy and Virginia Carol Blair as pillars of generosity within their community. Jason Busby, a friend of the couple, shared his shock and sorrow with WLBT, highlighting the Blairs' character. "The man would’ve given you the shirt off his back, his wife is the same, and they’re just great people. It’s just a tragedy," Busby stated. He added that the entire neighborhood was struggling to come to terms with the devastating events. "Everybody around here is still in shock. They were just good people."
