In the early hours of February 22, an incident unfolded at President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Austin Tucker Martin, a 21-year-old man from Cameron, North Carolina, was fatally shot by U.S. Secret Service agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office after he illegally entered the property's secure perimeter.
The confrontation occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time when Martin, armed with a shotgun and carrying a fuel can, was encountered by the agents near the north gate of the resort. As reported by Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and U.S. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, when Martin pointed his weapon at the officers, they responded with lethal force, resulting in his death at the scene.
Investigations revealed that Martin had been reported missing by his family prior to the incident. His last communication with them was around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, just hours before the shooting. The family had identified a silver 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan belonging to Martin, from which a box for the shotgun was recovered. According to the Daily Mail, Martin's family expressed disbelief over the events, with one family member posting on social media, "This is not like him at all."
An Instagram account linked to Martin displayed his interest in art, particularly illustrations of golf courses, landscapes, and architectural scenes. His passion for this form of expression was evident in the numerous photographs and drawings he shared online.
At the time of the breach, President Trump and the first lady were not at Mar-a-Lago but resided at the White House. The Secret Service confirmed that there were no protectees on the premises during the incident and that no agents or sheriff’s deputies were injured. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt commended the Secret Service's swift action during the incident, emphasizing the ongoing efforts of federal law enforcement to ensure national safety.
