A Fourth of July celebration on the Jersey Shore boardwalk took an unexpected turn when a Canadian national was arrested days after an alleged assault on a teenage girl, reportedly over her political attire. Kaitlyn Tracey, 33, faces multiple charges, and federal immigration proceedings are now underway, with her husband presenting a differing account of the incident and raising concerns about her treatment in detention.
"Trump is emboldening these people. They’re proud of their hate, not love." — Matthew Geroni, Husband of Kaitlyn Tracey
The incident, which occurred during Independence Day festivities, garnered attention after cellphone video footage was widely circulated online. The video reportedly shows Tracey repeatedly striking a teenage girl before leaving the scene. The identity and exact age of the alleged victim remain protected in court records, but police confirmed she sustained no serious physical harm.
Initially, officers present on the boardwalk allowed Tracey to depart without incident. However, detectives later reviewed surveillance footage, leading to a warrant for her arrest. Tracey subsequently surrendered to authorities, and federal immigration officers transferred her to Delaney Hall, a detention facility in New Jersey. She currently faces four criminal charges: endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault, harassment, and obstruction. Concurrently, immigration proceedings have commenced with the aim of deporting her to Canada.
Matthew Geroni, Tracey's 42-year-old husband, has publicly challenged the police narrative, offering a starkly different perspective on the events. Geroni claims that a group of teenagers first surrounded and shoved his wife, asserting that no blows were thrown by Tracey until after she was allegedly provoked. He further contended that the group of teenagers had spent the day actively seeking confrontations, specifically targeting individuals wearing clothing associated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Geroni also disputes claims that his wife fled from police, insisting that officers permitted her to leave the boardwalk freely, seemingly unaware that a warrant would be issued following a later review of the footage. He characterized the incident as a "nothing burger," a description he suggested police initially shared before analyzing the video, which he believes was taken "out of context."
Geroni has also expressed grave concerns regarding his wife's mental state and the conditions of her detention at Delaney Hall. He described her initial experience as being confined to a room with constant illumination, forced to sleep on a metal bench, and isolated by a language barrier, as most other women detained with her primarily spoke Spanish. "She said when she was brought there, she was left in a room where she had to sleep on a metal bench with all the lights on," Geroni told reporters, adding, "She said the conditions in there are horrible… She was obviously very upset." He recounted that Tracey spent her first full day under these conditions, sharing a holding room with two other women who had already endured similar circumstances for over 24 hours. "She expressed how badly she felt for them," Geroni stated, noting her discomfort alongside theirs. Conditions reportedly improved once Tracey was moved into the facility's general population, where she found other detainees to be "very nice to her." Tracey reportedly told her husband she is among the few Canadian citizens currently housed at the facility. Allegations of poor treatment at Delaney Hall are not new, and Geroni’s account adds to existing complaints.
Beyond the immediate incident, Geroni's public statements and online presence have drawn scrutiny. His social media accounts contain posts expressing wishes for the death of Senator Mitch McConnell and cancer upon the Trump family. When confronted about these remarks, Geroni did not retract them. Instead, he directed blame toward President Donald Trump for the boardwalk confrontation, stating, "Trump is emboldening these people. They’re proud of their hate, not love." When pressed on the apparent double standard of condemning hostility while engaging in similar rhetoric himself, Geroni offered no direct explanation.
In a related development, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a tweet on July 16, 2026, stating: "MAPLE LEAF MENACE. This illegal alien who assaulted a teenager has no business being in our country. She is now in @ICEgov custody pending REMOVAL from our nation." The tweet included a link and an image related to the case.
Geroni also launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover his wife's legal expenses and secure her release, but the page was removed from the platform shortly after its creation. He attributed the removal to "MAGA people" flagging it for political reasons. However, GoFundMe's guidelines prohibit campaigns raising money for individuals facing active criminal charges, irrespective of who reports them.
Despite the legal and personal challenges, Geroni affirmed his commitment to his wife, stating he would abandon their life in Ocean Beach entirely if her case necessitated relocation. "I would do anything to be with my wife," he said. Contact between the couple has been restricted to brief exchanges since her detention began. Tracey's case is now proceeding through both the criminal justice system and federal immigration courts, with deportation to Canada anticipated upon its conclusion.
