A routine stop at a Wawa convenience store in Riviera Beach, Florida, on the morning of May 3 turned into an extraordinary display of honesty when construction worker Luis Salavar, 58, discovered a substantial sum of cash. Salavar entered the men's restroom and noticed a black fanny pack hanging on a handicap bar. Assuming it belonged to the man who had just exited the stall, he retrieved it with the intention of returning it.
"$30,000 is great, but it's not mine to keep. I like to earn my money." — Luis Salavar, Construction Worker
"So, I saw it, and I grabbed it, and I tried to locate the person that was there," Salavar told WPBF. His initial search of the store and repeated checks of the parking lot proved fruitless; the man had already departed. Hoping to find identification to facilitate the return, Salavar opened the bag. What he found inside was a shock: neatly stacked $50 and $100 bills totaling $30,023. "My body was just numb, just seeing all this money that belonged to somebody else," he recounted.
The money belonged to an unidentified 24-year-old Florida man who had stopped at the Wawa while en route to a family gathering in Coral Springs. He was carrying the cash proceeds from the recent sale of his extensive Pokémon card collection. This money was not for leisure; it was earmarked for a specific and urgent purpose: his younger sister required a critical medical procedure, and she lacked health insurance. After using the restroom, he inadvertently left the fanny pack behind and drove away.
It was not until he reached Broward County that the owner realized his fanny pack was missing. "I was like, 'Oh my God, my freaking money's gone. I'm out of all this bread. I don't know what I'm going to do,'" the owner stated. He immediately turned his car around and sped back to the Wawa, only to find the restroom empty and the bag gone. "I thought I was absolutely screwed," he added.
That same day, the distraught owner contacted the Riviera Beach Police Department, initiating a grand-theft investigation. Officers quickly pulled the store's surveillance footage, which clearly showed Salavar exiting the restroom with the fanny pack, then pacing through the store and searching the parking lot in an apparent attempt to find the owner. Riviera Beach Police spokesman Mike Jachles confirmed the events captured on camera.
Salavar, however, did not immediately turn the money over to store employees or the police. He told The Washington Post he lacked faith that doing so would guarantee the cash would be reunited with its rightful owner. Instead, he decided to keep the money himself while continuing his independent search for the owner.
Detectives, using information from the rental van Salavar was driving, eventually traced him and asked him to come to the station on May 7. Salavar complied. When the owner walked into the station, Salavar instantly recognized him by his sandals. The reunion was emotional. "So, I give him his bag. 'This is yours.' And he was crying. And he hugged me," Salavar described.
Officers' body cameras recorded the moment the owner unzipped the pack and meticulously counted the bills, confirming that every dollar was present. "I was pretty astonished that anybody would have done that," the owner later remarked. "Think about it. That's life-changing money. People would kill for that kind of money." The owner offered to buy Salavar dinner as a token of gratitude, but Salavar politely declined. "I just did the right thing," he said. "I don't need to be put on a pedestal."
When asked if the thought of keeping the money had ever crossed his mind, Salavar was unequivocal. "$30,000 is great, but it's not mine to keep. I like to earn my money," he stated. He further emphasized to ABC 7, "It's not my money to take. I was not raised that way." The owner concluded the remarkable episode with a reflection on human nature: "I guess maybe there's just more good people in the world than most people think. You never know who you'll run into, and Luis is just one of those good people." Salavar's actions resonated widely, sparking praise for his integrity and selflessness.
