A social media post by journalist Taylor Lorenz this week ignited a substantial online debate, drawing millions of views and widespread commentary. Lorenz, 40, who relocated from New York City to Los Angeles in 2020, directed her Sunday morning post on X to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, advocating for improvements in the vegan cream cheese offerings at the city’s bagel shops.
"6k likes melting down over a troll tweet. This website is so easy" — Taylor Lorenz, Journalist
In her post, Lorenz stated, "The bagels in LA suck, but all the LA bagel shops at least use cashew-based vegan cream cheese. NYC bagel shops almost never have vegan cc or they’re using hyper processed Tofutti [vomiting emoji]. I hope Zohran can remedy this." This message quickly accumulated over 2.5 million views, sparking a wave of reactions across the platform.
Immediately following her initial post, Lorenz disabled comments on the thread, a move that nonetheless failed to contain the ensuing backlash. An X user captured a screenshot of the original post and republished it, appending their own commentary which characterized Lorenz's demand as, "'I hope the communist mayor can force bagel shops to serve my vegan slop cream cheese.'" The user further remarked, "Just incredible. It’s like she was created in a lab," opening the floodgates for widespread critique.
Hundreds of users subsequently joined the discussion, with many expressing similar sentiments about the perceived overreach of government into private enterprise. One commenter stated, "Leftists want the government to intervene in everything from healthcare to housing to cream cheese. It is so absurd." The criticism extended even to those who might share similar dietary preferences, as one self-identified vegetarian flatly commented, "I’m a vegetarian and this annoys me." Another user extrapolated a broader ideological conclusion, observing, "The ‘tolerance, inclusion, compassion and empathy’ crowd is at it again. Everything has to be the way they like it so we can truly have diversity. They see nothing wrong with this either."
In response to the torrent of criticism, Lorenz issued a follow-up post, describing those mocking her as "Right wingers and reactionary weirdos are all QTing this taking it so seriously and getting angry at the concept of vegan cream cheese." She then referenced Erewhon, a luxury grocery chain in Los Angeles known for its high-priced specialty items, including $15 vegan yogurts and $21 smoothies. Lorenz added, "You guys couldn’t survive 5 minutes inside an Erewhon," seemingly to underscore a perceived disconnect between her critics and her lifestyle. In a separate post, she later claimed her original message was intended as a joke.
The following morning, Lorenz posted another message structured similarly to her initial one, this time targeting Los Angeles bagel shops for including chia seeds on their everything bagels and tagging three Los Angeles elected officials: "I hope Nithya, Bass, or Pratt can remedy this." Hours later, she shared a photo of herself holding an everything bagel topped with what appeared to be her preferred cashew-based vegan cream cheese alternative. Comments on this subsequent post were also disabled.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist who assumed office as the 112th mayor of New York City in January 2026, has not issued any public statement in response to Lorenz’s request regarding bagel shop offerings. The incident highlights the rapid spread of online discourse and the varied interpretations of social media posts, particularly when they touch upon consumer habits, local politics, and ideological viewpoints. The exchange on X demonstrates how quickly a seemingly niche comment can escalate into a broader discussion about societal norms and governmental roles.
