Federal officials announced Wednesday an escalation in vandalism incidents targeting the National Mall, encompassing damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, repeated "8647" markings, and a message written in blood on the Washington Monument. These incidents have reportedly intensified in recent weeks as restoration work, ordered by President Donald Trump, continues across the historic site.

The Department of the Interior confirmed that the recent acts appear to be part of a broader pattern of disrespect for national monuments and federal property. Katie Martin, Communications Director for the Interior Department, told Fox News Digital that this summer has seen a significant increase in vandalism on the National Mall. She highlighted multiple instances of "8647" markings, damage to the Reflecting Pool's new surface, vandalized equipment, and a particularly disturbing incident involving an individual allegedly using their own blood to write the words "I’ve come" on the Washington Monument.
The first known act of vandalism occurred on June 9, shortly after the restoration work on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was completed. Officials initially withheld details, believing it to be an isolated incident and hoping to prevent copycat acts. However, additional cases soon followed, including videos circulating online that depicted individuals actively damaging the pool’s newly installed surface. Police reports reviewed by Fox News Digital detail that vandals cut more than 300 feet of the pool’s liner with what investigators described as razor-blade-like slashes, with sections measuring between 6 and 15 inches completely removed. Fencing and chains surrounding the pool were also reportedly pulled apart and thrown into the water.
The "8647" markings have appeared repeatedly across the National Mall. Authorities launched an investigation earlier this month after these numbers were carved into the grass near the Washington Monument. The meaning or motivation behind these specific numbers remains under investigation.
In response to the escalating damage, the U.S. Park Police has appealed to the public for assistance in identifying suspects. Authorities have confirmed that multiple arrests have already been made in connection with the incidents. Administration officials stated that five individuals have been arrested on vandalism charges related to the Reflecting Pool, with an additional five people receiving federal citations. Investigators have filed 14 police reports documenting the damage at the site. Among those charged is David Hearn, identified as a former Olympic canoeist, who faces a misdemeanor charge of destruction of government property. Officials allege Hearn was involved in an incident where he reached into the water and interfered with equipment being used by a National Park Service employee.
President Trump has publicly condemned the vandalism, asserting that the newly restored Reflecting Pool and surrounding grounds were intentionally damaged. White House officials responded by announcing that fencing around the Reflecting Pool, initially scheduled for installation before Independence Day celebrations, would now be erected earlier than planned to deter further damage. White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers stated, "The Reflecting Pool was always set to be fenced off ahead of the Fourth of July. With the increase in vandalism, the fencing is going up earlier than originally planned to ensure no more damage is done to this historic site." This accelerated timeline aims to safeguard the historic landmark from additional defacement and destruction.
The National Mall, a prominent symbol of American democracy and history, draws millions of visitors annually. The ongoing restoration efforts, which have been a point of pride for the administration, aim to preserve these iconic sites for future generations. The recent wave of vandalism has prompted a renewed focus on security measures and public vigilance to protect these national treasures.
