Davenport, FL – A coordinated investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's Office concluded with the arrest of 15 individuals following an alleged organized theft of food and beverages from a Wawa convenience store on June 26. The incident, which employees reported at the Wawa on Old Lake Wilson Road, involved a group of adults and juveniles who allegedly worked together to conceal merchandise and consume items without paying.
"This is a classic case of people who came to our county, fooled around, and found out." — Sheriff Grady Judd, Polk County Sheriff
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, store employees contacted authorities after observing a group of individuals moving throughout the store, hiding bottled drinks and various food items within their clothing. Investigators noted that the suspects appeared to know one another, arriving in three distinct vehicles: a BMW, a Tesla, and a Honda Accord. Over approximately 15 minutes, the individuals allegedly took turns entering and leaving the store, with some consuming stolen items inside the premises while others reportedly acted to obstruct employees' views, facilitating the thefts by their accomplices.
Surveillance footage obtained by deputies from the store reportedly corroborated the employees' accounts, depicting what authorities described as a series of coordinated thefts. When law enforcement arrived on the scene, the suspects were still present in the parking lot, preparing to depart. Deputies detained the group, successfully recovering some of the unconsumed merchandise, collecting empty bottles and packaging materials that were left behind, and conducting interviews with those involved in the alleged incident. All 15 individuals suspected of theft reportedly admitted to taking the items. The stolen merchandise, which included Calypso drinks, Brisk iced tea, a bag of Cheetos, and ramen soup, had an estimated total value of approximately $40.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd issued a strong condemnation of the alleged actions, asserting that the suspects treated the convenience store as if they were entitled to take items without payment. "This is a classic case of people who came to our county, fooled around, and found out," Sheriff Judd stated. "Now they’re all facing charges because they found it perfectly acceptable to go into the Wawa, grab what they wanted, and consume it without paying for it."
The 15 theft suspects consist of 12 adults and three juveniles. The 12 adult suspects were transported to the Polk County Jail, while the three juveniles were taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. All 15 individuals face charges of petit theft and tampering with evidence. Additionally, the adult suspects face charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Authorities also reported that some individuals received additional charges, including probation violations and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, after deputies allegedly discovered drugs in one of the vehicles associated with the group.
During the ongoing investigation, an unrelated individual, identified as 18-year-old Jayden Murphy of Pomona Park, approached the scene. Deputies reported that Murphy began yelling at the theft suspects, instructing them not to cooperate with law enforcement. Despite repeated requests from deputies to move away from the active investigation area, Murphy allegedly refused to comply. Authorities stated that Murphy was standing approximately 17 feet away from officers while they were conducting their duties. Consequently, Murphy was arrested under Florida's "Halo Law," a statute that establishes a 25-foot buffer zone around active law enforcement officers and other first responders. Murphy was charged with two counts of harassing first responders and two counts of resisting arrest.
Officials noted that the suspects involved in the alleged theft were from various parts of Florida and had been lodging at an Airbnb in Polk County during their stay. The case remains pending in the legal system, and all individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
