Former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard recently shared an emotional update regarding her husband, Abraham Williams, and his ongoing recovery from a rare form of cancer. In a video posted to social media, Gabbard revealed that while medical professionals believe they successfully removed the cancerous tissue, the family acknowledges that the battle is not yet over.
"The reality is that the battle isn't over yet." — Tulsi Gabbard, Former Director of National Intelligence
Williams was diagnosed with sacral chordoma, an uncommon cancer that originates in the sacrum, located at the base of the spine. The diagnosis and subsequent treatment led Gabbard to step down from her role as Director of National Intelligence in May, a decision made to allow her to fully support her husband through his treatment and recovery journey. Her public update offered a rare glimpse into the personal challenges faced by public figures and their families.
Gabbard detailed the extensive surgery Williams underwent, a nearly seven-hour operation designed to excise the affected bone and surrounding tissue. The immediate aftermath of such a procedure proved to be particularly difficult, as Williams grappled with the effects of heavy anesthesia. "His body, as he started to come out, started reacting to the drugs that were in his body. It was tough," Gabbard recounted, visibly emotional in her video.
Despite the initial complications and discomfort, Williams demonstrated remarkable resolve in his recovery. Gabbard described his determination to regain mobility, even in the face of physical setbacks. "He would take a few steps. He would throw up as he was trying to walk around. But he kept going," she shared, highlighting his resilience. Williams has since continued with physical therapy, diligently working to restore his strength and mobility. Gabbard noted the positive trajectory of his rehabilitation, stating, "Overall, Abraham is progressing very well."
A significant milestone in Williams' treatment came a few weeks after the surgery, when pathologists and doctors conveyed their confidence in the surgical outcome. "A few weeks after the surgery was done, pathologists and the doctor said that they were confident they were able to cut out all of the cancerous bone and tissue," Gabbard explained. This news provided a crucial sense of relief and hope for the couple.
However, Gabbard underscored that this positive development does not signify the end of their ordeal. She cautioned against complacency, stating, "The reality is that the battle isn't over yet." Williams will require frequent MRI scans to meticulously monitor for any indications of the cancer's recurrence at the original site or its potential spread to other areas of the body. This ongoing vigilance is a critical component of managing a rare and aggressive cancer like sacral chordoma.
Throughout this challenging period, Gabbard spoke about the profound role that faith has played for her and Williams. She expressed deep gratitude, saying, "We are so grateful to God for His unconditional love, for being our shelter, for being our peace and our strength." She also extended her thanks to the medical team providing care for Williams and to the many individuals who have offered prayers and support, as reported by the Daily Mail. In a poignant moment during her social media update, as Gabbard became visibly emotional, Williams stepped forward to embrace her, offering words of comfort: "Love you, darlin'." Gabbard responded, "I love you," underscoring the deep bond between them.
Since departing her federal intelligence role, Gabbard has largely maintained a private profile, dedicating her attention to Williams' health. While her primary focus remains on her husband's recovery, she has occasionally weighed in on national issues. Last month, for instance, she commented on Anthony Fauci's appearance before Congress, accusing him of misleading lawmakers and alleging that intelligence officials had suppressed information concerning the origins of COVID-19. Nevertheless, the immediate priority for Tulsi Gabbard remains her husband's continued healing and rehabilitation as he works to regain his full strength and health.
