Andrew Gillum, a prominent figure in Florida's Democratic Party and former nominee for governor, was arrested Thursday night in Daphne, Alabama, on multiple drug-related charges. Police records indicate Gillum, 46, was taken into custody and booked on charges of possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana. He was subsequently released from custody.
The arrest reportedly stemmed from a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 98. Officers observed a vehicle being driven erratically and identified Gillum as the driver. During the stop, police noticed a glass pipe inside the vehicle, prompting a search. Authorities stated that the search yielded several marijuana cigarettes and three packages containing a substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine. The Daphne Police Department has not disclosed additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrest, according to NBC Miami.
This latest incident brings renewed scrutiny to Gillum’s public and legal history, which has been punctuated by controversies since his 2018 gubernatorial bid. In that election, Gillum narrowly lost to Republican Ron DeSantis by fewer than 34,000 votes after a statewide recount. At the time, he was widely regarded as a rising star within the Democratic Party, energizing progressive voters and becoming the first Black nominee for governor in Florida's history. Before his statewide campaign, Gillum served as the mayor of Tallahassee from 2014 to 2018.
Following his narrow defeat, Gillum’s public career shifted from political advancement to a series of legal and personal challenges. In 2020, he was found in a room at the Mondrian South Beach Hotel in Miami after police responded to a report of a possible overdose. Officers at the scene discovered suspected methamphetamine and prescription medication bottles. Gillum was not charged in connection with that incident, as prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence to directly link him to the drugs, as reported by Local 10. Following this event, Gillum announced he would seek treatment and step away from public life.
More recently, Gillum faced federal charges related to allegations of campaign finance irregularities and the handling of his political operation. In 2023, a federal jury acquitted him of a charge alleging he lied to the FBI. The jury, however, did not reach a verdict on other counts concerning the alleged improper handling of campaign funds. Prosecutors later dismissed the remaining charges.
The current arrest in Alabama introduces a new set of legal hurdles for Gillum. The charge of possession of dangerous drugs is classified as a felony under Alabama state law and could lead to a potential prison sentence if he is convicted. The charges for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia are considered misdemeanors, according to Florida Politics.
Gillum has not yet issued any public statements regarding the latest allegations. Authorities have indicated that the investigation into the circumstances of the arrest remains ongoing, and no additional charges have been announced at this time. The repeated legal entanglements continue to overshadow the political promise Gillum once held as a potential national figure for the Democratic Party.
