A wave of gun violence swept across the United States on Saturday, as three separate mass shootings erupted within hours in Kentucky, Illinois, and Virginia, leaving one person dead and more than a dozen wounded. The incidents, which spanned from early morning to evening, prompted rapid law enforcement responses and renewed calls for action against gun violence.
"This is not normal. We come together every year as a family and kick it on the Eastside and we haven’t had something like this happen, EVER." — Devine Carama, Director of ONE Lexington
The first incident occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday at Virginia State University, triggering a campus lockdown. Five individuals, ranging in age from 17 to 23, sustained injuries, with one victim reported to be in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that only one of the five wounded was a student at Virginia State University, while the other four were not affiliated with the institution. Later that evening, police apprehended 19-year-old Camron Harris in connection with the shooting. Harris, identified as a Virginia resident and not a university student, was taken into custody as investigators continued to examine whether multiple suspects were involved in the incident.
Hours later, as evening approached, two more shootings unfolded. At approximately 6:45 p.m., gunfire erupted at Charles Young Park in Lexington, Kentucky, where an outdoor concert was reportedly underway. Videos from the scene captured the sound of at least 13 gunshots as attendees scattered for safety. Five people were shot in the attack, including a 4-year-old child, a 14-year-old, and two adults who were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Tragically, a fifth victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Devine Carama, Director of ONE Lexington, a local youth gun violence reduction program, was present at the park during the shooting. He recounted witnessing people attempting to render aid to the victims before emergency services arrived, describing a chaotic scene where parkgoers performed CPR and one individual carried a young shooting victim. Carama expressed profound sorrow, stating, "My heart is broken. This evening we had a shooting at the park with multiple victims and one fighting for his life." He emphasized the unusual nature of such violence in their community, adding, "This is not normal. We come together every year as a family and kick it on the Eastside and we haven’t had something like this happen, EVER."
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers addressed the public, stating that authorities did not believe there was an ongoing threat but urged anyone with information regarding potential violence to contact law enforcement. "If you know somebody who might be inclined to use a weapon, please do anything you can do to let us know before something happens," Weathers appealed. "Please let us know." Following the Kentucky shooting, Democratic Governor Andy Beshear, speaking at a Kentucky Democratic Party event, linked the incident to the broader political discourse on gun control. "To stop mass shootings, we have got to elect Democrats that will actually do something about it," Governor Beshear stated. No arrests have been announced in connection with the Lexington shooting, and the investigation remains active.
Roughly 30 minutes after the Kentucky incident, a third mass shooting occurred in Chicago's Gresham neighborhood at approximately 7:15 p.m. Police reported that a vehicle pulled alongside a group of individuals walking on a sidewalk, and multiple occupants inside the vehicle opened fire before fleeing the scene. Four people were wounded in the drive-by attack, including a 43-year-old man, a 34-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman, and another man whose age was not immediately available. Two of the victims were reported to be in critical condition. As with the Lexington shooting, no arrests have been made in the Chicago incident, and investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the violence.
The rapid succession of these events across different states underscores the persistent challenge of gun violence in the United States, prompting urgent discussions among community leaders, law enforcement, and political figures on effective strategies for prevention and response. Authorities in all three locations continue their efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the tragic events of Saturday.
