Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, has recently stated his intention to step back from public political commentary, a decision that has sparked a significant reaction among his Hollywood peers. This shift in approach was detailed in a Summer 2026 cover feature for Esquire magazine, where Johnson articulated his reasoning for maintaining political neutrality moving forward.
"Politics is omnipresent and it’s forever. I don’t like it. I hate it at times. I hate the slinging. I hate all the bulls— that comes with it." — Dwayne Johnson, Actor
In the Esquire interview, Johnson emphasized his primary focus on his acting career and storytelling. "What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep — need, not want — the main thing the main thing," Johnson stated, adding, "I’ve learned I’m going to keep my politics to myself." While he indicated a possibility of speaking out on specific issues in the future, Johnson conveyed a clear distaste for the broader political landscape. He remarked, "Politics is omnipresent and it’s forever. I don’t like it. I hate it at times. I hate the slinging. I hate all the bulls— that comes with it."
Immediately following the publication of these remarks, several notable entertainment personalities voiced their disapproval. George Takei, known for his role in "Star Trek," utilized the social media platform Threads to criticize Johnson's stance. Takei initially posted that Johnson’s comments had "divided fans, with some calling out his silence," and subsequently followed up with a more pointed comment: "Silence is complicity." Wil Wheaton, star of "Stand By Me," also joined the criticism, posting a message that was later deleted but captured by Entertainment Weekly. Wheaton's post reportedly read, "So disappointing to find out he is such a coward."
The backlash, however, was not universal. Comedian Matt Rife defended Johnson on X, directly addressing Wheaton's comment. Rife countered, "I love how he’s a ‘coward’ but could quite literally tear Wil’s throat out through his a–hole." He concluded his post by observing, "This internet comment world is so bold." Additionally, a social media user named Jeffro, posting under the handle @TenBears777, expressed a sentiment shared by some members of the public: "Honestly…I don’t wanna know who supports who in Hollywood. I watch movies/ shows to be entertained. I go to stand up to laugh my ass off…concerts to listen to music. An occasional jab at politicians is cool…but don’t preach to me about your politics…don’t care." This tweet reflects a segment of the audience that prefers entertainers to remain apolitical.
Johnson's current position marks a notable evolution from his past political engagement. In 2020, despite identifying as a political Independent, Johnson publicly endorsed then-candidate Joe Biden for president. This endorsement garnered significant attention within Hollywood and beyond, representing one of the few instances where Johnson overtly entered partisan political discourse.
The actor later elaborated on his changed perspective during an April 2024 appearance on Fox News with host Will Cain. Reflecting on his 2020 endorsement, Johnson described it as "what I thought was the best decision for me at that time." He acknowledged the considerable backlash that followed, stating, "That tears me up in my guts back then and now." Johnson explained that the experience led him to a deeper realization: "The takeaway after that months and months and months, I started to realize like, ‘Oh man, that caused an incredible amount of division in our country.’" This realization informed his decision to abstain from endorsing any candidate in the 2024 presidential race. "So I realize now going into this election, I’m not going to do that. I wouldn’t do that because my goal is to bring our country together. I believe in that, in my DNA. So in the spirit of that, there’s going to be no endorsement," Johnson affirmed.
Johnson also clarified that his decision to remain silent on political endorsements was not driven by apprehension. He stated, "Not that I’m afraid of it at all, but it’s just I realize that this level of influence — I’m going to keep my politics to myself, and I think it’s between me and the ballot box."
The ongoing debate between Johnson and his celebrity critics highlights a broader, persistent tension within Hollywood regarding the role of public figures in political discourse. It raises questions about whether celebrities have a moral obligation to use their platforms to advocate for political causes or if they are entitled to keep their political views private. As of now, Johnson has not issued a public response to the criticisms from Takei or Wheaton, allowing the discussion to continue unfolding among fans and fellow celebrities across various online platforms.
